Tully’s Tours at Highlands

Tully Rule, a nine-year-old local lad from Cromwell Primary School is responsible for the latest experience at Highlands. Tully’s Tours will be part of The Festival of Speed at Highlands from April 5 to 7 and will give fans a rare, behind-the-scenes, guided tour of the pits.

Josie Spillane, the Chief Operating Officer at Highlands was giving a presentation to the senior class at Cromwell Primary about the best things to do in the South Island when she asked the class if there was anything they would like to see or do at Highlands.

“Someone suggested a volcano, another wanted a flying fox, but Tully suggested that we help people who don’t know a lot about motorsport by hosting free guided tours of the pits,” says Spillane. “I thought it was a great idea and so we’ve created Tully’s Tours at Highlands.”

When asked how he came up with the idea Tully said “ Well, I love going to Highlands, and have been to heaps of things there and I wanted to know what happens in the pits so I thought maybe other people were the same.”

“I never thought they’d name it after me! I’m a bit nervous but really excited. Josie said when I’m old enough I can have a job at the Go-Karts, so I reckon that’s even better”

On Sunday, April 7 at The Festival of Speed, Highlands professional driver Damon Leitch will host tours of the pits with Tully  at 11.35am and 2.15pm. They will explain what happens in the pits, the role of the race engineer and mechanic and he also hopes to give fans a sneak peek into the race control tower.

The Festival of Speed promises to be an action-packed weekend of racing for both competitors and spectators alike and it brings together the two things Highlands is famous for, great racing and unique on-track action experiences.

Entry to the festival is only $30 or $50 for a two-day pass and children under 16 get in free with a paying adult.  Tickets include entry to the Highlands Museum. Friday, April 5 is a practice day and open to the public for free. Tickets are available at the gate all weekend or via our website.
